Not wanting to be found out, Anna pushed back through the gauntlet and returned to the Umbra, where no nasty cops could follow.

Anna made it back across the gauntlet before she was found out, putting her in a representation of the same room but without the shelves and boxes.

Anna waited. She wasn't usually the impatient type, but today she couldn't stand waiting for very long. She wondered if she should attempt to peek again. After a good ten minutes, she decided the cop would have had enough time to realise no one was there and to get whatever he came for.
So she stepped sideways behind the shelf.

Anna made it back across the gauntlet without any difficulty. The lights in the evidence room had been turned out and she found herself in near total darkness.

Too afraid of bumping into things and making too much noise, Anna shifted to Lupus to get a better look around and locate the light switch. Once she did, she shifted back to homid and turned it on.
Now all that was left to do was find the eggs.

It took Anna a frustratingly long time to make the transition to Lupus, getting stuck in Hispo for a time before she could finally make it the last step. Though her wolf vision was far from perfect, it did at least offer improved night vision and she was able to make her way through the shelves without knocking anything over and making any noise. The transition back to her natural form was far less tortuous, and Anna flicked on the lights again.

With the lights on, Anna wasted no time looking in the most recent evidence boxes for the eggs. She worked fast, but carefully. She didn't want to alert anyone to her illegal search.

It didn't take long for Anna to locate the incubator box that she'd found in the poacher's bag. It was sealed in a plastic bag and had a tag with some indecipherable code written on it that only someone on that case would know. Next to it was another bag, containing the crampons, knife and pistol. The code on the second tag is similar to the first.

To Anna, this was the most welcome sight ever. Even if they somehow managed to get away without a sentence, they wouldn't risk returning to the forest to bag more owl eggs. She hoped that the owl would accept this as a victory. She was just going to have to return and hope for the best.
She wished she could return the eggs, but carrying them out of here would be impossible. Plus, they probably needed the evidence if they wanted to get a conviction.
She straightened up and stepped sideways, before making her way back to the forest.

With unusual ease, Anna was back across the gauntlet and running as a wolf again. It was another long tiring run, but she'd slept recently and wasn't constantly under pressure any more. Compared to everything else she'd done in the past 24 hours it was a breeze.

Once she reached the forest, she started retracing her steps back to where she had first met the owl. Once she reached his tree, she called out loudly to him.
"I have found your egg-thieves," she said. "And I have made sure they will not return. They now sit in metal prisons, and will..."
She paused, trying to find a way to explain human law to the owl. She decided not to try.
"And will be punished for their crime by humans."

Anna really couldn't be sure which tree she was barking up, it could of very well been the wrong one.
But despite this, it wasn't long before a familiar-looking little owl flew overhead and landed on one of the branches above her. It hoots a greeting. "Are you sure about that?"
Furthermore the swan-maiden was close by, watching again.

Anna almost launched into an explanation about the legal system and poaching, and possessions of illegal firearms, but stopped herself. She just settled with giving her word. "I am sure," she said. She glanced at the swan-maiden, wondering how much she knew about what Anna had done to get here, and hoped it wasn't much.

When she glanced back Anna noticed the swan-maiden had a faint smile for some reason.
The owl hoots again. "Well, young Theurge. You have done as I have asked, but the more important question is: What have you learnt from it?"

"What did learn?"
Anna sat down and thought about it. She hadn't been expecting a "what have we learnt today" question after all of this. She had been too busy trying to get things right to learn much of anything. She did learn that she probably shouldn't expect much help from anyone, because that would just blow up in her face. And even something as familiar as the Umbra could turn on you when you least expect it. And that most of what she had learnt had left her quite unprepared to face even the simplest challenge. And probably that things look a lot better when you get a good night's rest.
But when she opened her mouth to speak, all she managed was. "It's a lot more difficult to do things on your own."
