"Yeah? You were around before the fall?" the man asked. "Things have changed a lot. You should have called ahead, not just out of respect, for safety." He glanced back at the Library too. It could hardly be called dilapidated. It was better taken care of than it was a few years ago. But it definitely didn't look like the happy family place it had been ten years ago. "So who are you?" the man insisted.

'Fall'? Adam thinks to himself. Must be some kind of cult code. Sure, I was here sometime prior to last autumn...
"Yeah, I would've called," He says to the man, "But, truth be told, I wasn't sure the place was even still standing after everything that's happened."
He had no clue of what'd actually happened here, but obviously, something had occurred.
"Forgive me," He says, offering a hand in greeting, "I'm Dr. Fleisher... Adam, if you will. And you are?"

That didn't seem to be a satisfactory answer. At least the man didn't look like he was satisfied with the answer. "Where you from, Adam?" he asked. "What rank are you?"

"Rank?" Adam repeats, contemplating taking a step away from the man, "Formerly a Captain, but I have left the service now."
They have military connections... He muses.
"I'm sorry," He says, "I didn't quite catch your name."

The man looked confused at first, then seemed to come to a realisation. "Oh, funny," he said. "You are a strange man." He scratched the stubble on his chin with his left hand. "Are you here alone?" he asked. "Did anyone follow you here?"

The young man was being very uncooperative. Adam hoped that his compatriots would be less elusive.
"Nobody followed me," He says, shaking his head, "At least, I didn't notice anybody following me."
He motions down the road with his thumb.
"I came from a place called Ragnarok." He adds with a shrug.

The man nodded. "Yeah, that's my friend's place," he said. "Great guy. Did'ya get to meet him?" He kept staring at Adam as he spoke. His 'small talk' seemed a little forced, as if he was just stalling for some reason. "Doesn't seem like your kind of place," he said, half shrugging with his left shoulder.

"Unfortunately, no," Adam says, shaking his head, ""He wasn't around."
Dr. Fleischer looks past the lad once again.
"So," He says, "You the boss around here, or is there someone else I should letting know that I'm here?"

"No, I'm the Keeper of the Land," the man said. "And I was going to take you to meet the boss as soon as you introduced yourself." He grimaced painfully as he scratched his right arm through the sling. "Unless you're a Black Spiral Dancer, then I was just going to kill you. You're not a Black Spiral Dancer, are you?" He looked almost amused as he asked this, but showed no other signs that it wasn't a serious question.

"I'm pretty sure this conversation would've gone a little differently if I were a follower of the Wyrm," He says, with a slight grin, "Don't you agree?"
He suppresses a sigh at what he was about to say, but it seemed to be necessary.
"I am Adam Fleisher, Cliath Philodox of the Glasswalker tribe." He regurgitates the words in a deadpan, monotone manner, as though they were an unwanted chore.

The man relaxed a little and offered a half smile. "Y'see, that wasn't so hard," he said. He unlatched the gate and opened it, letting Adam inside. "I am Micah, Fostern Philodox of the Fianna, and Keeper of the Land. Let's go."
He pushed the gate shut after Adam stepped inside and led the way along the small path that led to the front door of the Library.

Later...
The bus carrying Nina and Corina dropped them off in Hennigsdorf and continued on its merry way, shutting the masses off to their destination. Corina led them up a small slope, passing a few houses as they did. Finally, they reached the Library. It was set a little out of the way, and there was a fence around the yard in front of it. It didn't look like a very welcome place. The only way up was on foot.
Corina was talking as they made their way up towards the gate. "The place is actually a Library, complete with books and everything," she said. "The Caern's founder was a Glass Walker whose life ambition was to collect books. It was even open to the public for a while. It closed down once the city fell to the Wyrm. And, I heard that one pack of Garou singlehandedly took back the city and reopened the Caern. At least that's the story being told. But if Walks-with-Death is telling it... well then I suppose it's true."
She stopped once she reached the gate and looked around for a doorbell or something. "Always let them know you're coming," she said. "I wouldn't put it past them to rip your head off and ask questions later. It's that kind of town."

Nina felt the cold seep into her bones while she looked around the fence and the gate. She wasn't sure if the long bus ride had cooled her off after her run and she was now just starting to feel it again, or if there had been a foreboding tone in Cloud-Dancer's warning that she did not quite like. "Is there anything I should know, anything I should bear in mind before we go in there?" she asked Corina. She was starting to realise how little she knew about these people and this world that she had so readily flung herself into. For the first time since she had arrived in Berlin, she wondered if she had bit off a little more than she could chew.

"Nothing I haven't told you before," Corina said, still examining the gate. "It's more dangerous here than Stuttgart, so keep your eyes and ears open at all times. Constant vigilance and all that. Don't cross the wall, ever."
A tall wiry man with long brown hair approached. He looked a little older than Nina, with a short stubble on his face and a little underdressed for the weather. His right arm was in a sling, and he scratched it with his left hand as he reached the gate. "May I help you?" he asked. His German accent was quite thick and he spoke very slowly, as if he wasn't sure of the words.
Corinna looked up at the man. "No way," she said, smiling at the man. "Micah? Is that you?" She looked at his maimed arm, and then back up at him. He looked nothing like the young pup she had known ten years ago. She was surprised she even recognised him.
Micah smiled as he recognised Corina. "Cloud-Dancer-Rhya," he said. "Yes, it's me. It has been too long. Who is your friend?" He looked curiously at Nina.

Nina felt bold all of a sudden. So he was one of them. Wasn't this what she had been waiting for for so long? She didn't wait for Corina to introduce her.
"My name is Nina," she said to the man. "I arrived in Berlin yesterday."
She debated holding her hand out for a handshake, but decided against it. Who knew where else that left hand had been scratching.
