Anna didn't give up yet. It could just be that this was the wrong place to look. Now that she could see, she started searching for owl nests nearby. Where there were owls, there were eggs.
Anna wasn't a good hunter. In fact, saying she was a very mediocre hunter would be too kind. But she tried to catch the scent of humans anyway. She probably didn't do a very good job.

Anna had as little success as she expected, finding no sign of any human passage in the area. She had little more success finding any sign of owls, with any nests presumably being well-hidden enough to hide them from Anna's inexpert eye. It looked like there wasn't much Anna could do except watch and wait, so wait she did.
It took a few more hours before anything more significant than small animals moving around in the forest caught Anna's attention. It was not the expected contact however and Anna didn't even notice the stealthy movement until it was right behind her. If it was going to attack she didn't have time to look.

Anna's heart skipped a beat as she felt whatever it was creep up behind her. Moving as fast as she could, she jumped out of the bushes and ran off, throwing a look over her shoulder to see what it was that was stalking her.

Anna is on her feet and away in a second and there is no sound of pursuit behind her. When she looks back, she sees a grey wolf standing there quite placidly making no attempt to pursue.

Anna stopped trying to run away and skidded to a halt. She turned around and stared at the stranger, wondering what kind of wolf would creep up on other wolves like that. But since she'd only started being one herlself a year or so ago, she couldn't really reach any convincing conclusions.
"Who are you?" she asked the wolf. "Why are you following me?"

The wolf walked up to her and started circling her. It pauses mid-circle as she communicates and she receives an incomprehending look before replying. The raised tail and hackles got the message across on their own, but the growled response gave Anna a little more understanding. "You are in my territory man-wolf. Why?"

Anna had never spoken to a real wolf, so she couldn't really tell if this one was more than just wolf. On the other hand, it had called her a man-wolf.
"I'm looking for the thieves that take the owl eggs," she said, backing away slowly and getting ready to make a run for it should the wolf decide to attack.

Submission was the last thing he had expected from one of the man-wolves, though he wasn't about to risk her wrath in taking advantage of it in a claim of dominance. He circled closer and sniffed at her obtrusively before yipping and barking out a reply. "You smell like men. The shining place is your home. Do you intend to stay here?" He didn't like the idea of one of the man-wolves usurping his position. A submissive city-wolf at that.

"No, I'm only looking for the egg-thieves," Anna said. "Have you seen them?"
Although she was getting more convinced that he was 'just a wolf', she didn't relax, at least not visibly. She was well out of her element out here in the wilderness, and the wolf seemed to be well aware of it. She wondered if all wolves knew about werewolves, or if this one was just the wolf equivalent of kin.
She really wished she had bothered to ask these questions before.

The dominant behaviour subsided a little since she wasn't trying to take his territory. He looked about and yipped to his pack, who step out of the bushes around her and closed in. The four of them sniff at her too, but make much less of a show of it. The Alpha continued. "I do not know of egg-thieves, but men come here. Their marks are around."

Anna tried not to jump at the sight of the four extra wolves, especially when they all started sniffing her too. That itself didn't bother her. It wasn't like Garou didn't sniff people too.
"I'm hunting these men," Anna explained. "Can you tell me about them?"
She couldn't help feel that it was a stupid question. She really made a terrible wolf.

"They come here and climb trees. They have not for many nights, maybe they come again soon." He looked around at his packmates, his attention focused on one to Anna's left. "Show the man-wolf where men came." With little more than the lowering of her head, the bitch turned and made off into the undergrowth. The pack fell in around her, the Alpha pausing only to glance back at Anna before moving on.

If Anna had been a little less desperate, her paranoia would have won over and she wouldn't have followed the wolves. But she was hoping that whatever they showed her would help on her search for the egg-thieves. So she didn't hesitate for long, but in fell in line with the wolf pack and followed them.

The journey was short, Anna had probably gone right past the tire marks on the mud without noticing them. They were old and worn, though Anna couldn't guess how long, but they were somewhere to start. The Alpha wolf turned to look at her again. "They came here and climbed these trees. They made..." The wolf looked stumped briefly as it tried to think how explain the noise. "...odd sounds as they climbed. We did not come close to them, men only bring death." The wolf's look did seem, perhaps, a little bit too pointed.

"I must find them and stop them," Anna said, trying to get an idea of where the tire marks might lead. Then she looked around at the trees, trying to find anything useful that might give her an idea of who these men were.
Finally, she looked back at the Alpha wolf. "Odd noises?" she asked.
