Karin hid a smirk. "Do you even know what we're talking about, Daddy's boy?" she said. "Didn'y you only just get here yesterday. Odd choice of town to move to. You're not trying to be a hero are you? It's not going to make Mummy notice you."
She turned back to Yvonne. "Well you guys do seem to leave a trail of bodies wherever you go," she said, completely ignoring the fact that 90% of the deaths in berlin were somehow attributed to the Ratkin (and probably half of those to her alone).
"There has been talk," she said, getting a little serious. "Some of the Ratkin have considered joining the other side. They're scared. Most of us just want to stay out of it. I hope you make a really good argument, kid, because it's going to take a lot to convince them after what happened."

Yvonne managed to bite back her first, rather louder, response. But her temper was getting short. Ahroun get that way. "Now look!" Was the beginning that would only go downhill, as Yvonne stood and placed herself between Karin and Max. "I know we did wrong, and we really want to make up for it, but there's no need for all this abuse. We're all here just trying to do what we can, but if you're just going to be childish and call us names I don't know if there's anything we can do to help you." It's Yvonne's rarely seen interfering busybody side, inherited from her mother of course. It isn't a pretty sight, except possibly for Max who is now behind her.

Max blushed and was about to say something nasty as the rage bubbled just beneath the surface. But Yvonne was quicker. There was very little that could make this situation any worse, and Yvonne stepping in to defend him was probably one of those things.
He stood up too. He hated being the voice of reason. "We want to help," he said, placing a hand on Yvonne's shoulder in a calming gesture. "We're really sorry about what happened, ok. But we can't make it up to you if you insist on antagonising us. We're on the same side here."

Karin jumped up too, mostly because she didn't want the doggies to have any advantage on her.
"Are we?" she asked. "We're not on anybody's side. Taking sides has only gotten us killed or worse. You doggies can go ahead and kill each other, when it's done, we'll take back Berlin."
She folded her arms across her chest like she always did when things weren't going her way. Then she sat back down. "Ok, let's talk," she said, changing tone all of a sudden. "She's got more balls than you, you know," she said to Max. But she refrained from calling him a wuss in front of Yvonne.

Yvonne sat down again and did her best, which is normally quite good, at resuming being pleasant. "Aren't we on the same side? We're supposed to be working towards the same end aren't we? Not like the... others." Yvonne couldn't quite bring herself to say 'doggies', no matter how much easier it would make it to explain to Karin. "But we're not like them, they'll attack you just as readily as us. If you work with them it's only a matter of time before they turn on you, we'll never do that. It was a terrible mistake, we never meant to cause you any harm, we were just trying to get our wounded to safety."

"Suuuure you won't," Karin laughed. It was one of those laughs that made you nervous. Furthermore it was one of those laughs that made you sure there was nothing really funny going on.
"Look let's leave out all the shiny lies and reach an agreement. We don't want any part in your war. We don't want you in our sewers, and we don't want any more of our kids murdered."
It didn't matter that this wasn't what Karin wanted at all. Right now she was speaking for the colony. She twitched uncomfortably, wondering when she started doing what they wanted and not what she wanted. Somehow the park was getting much too small. And there were way too many people.

"Of course we're on the same side," Max said, sitting down again too. "Don't you fight the Wyrm too?"
He was glad it hadn't ended in violence. He didn't know Karin, but he was willing to bet she wouldn't think much of sinking her teeth into their throats in broad daylight, or at least attempting to.
"Would you rather the city turn into a tainted Wyrmhole? Because that's what will happen if they win."

"Of course we wont, I'm not lying! I don't lie!" She suppresses a further remark about not expecting Ratkin to understand honorable behavior. "If that's all you want then why are you really here? You could of said that to any of us without coming out to meet us like this." Yvonne shakes her head, she certainly isn't going to believe that. It's slowly becoming apparent that Karin is just playing games, but Yvonne's patience isn't going to hold out so she cuts to the point. "Isn't there some agreement we can come to that doesn't involve us turning our backs on each other again, at a time when we really all need to work together? Max is right, if you stand back and watch us fight and they win they'll come for you next."

"If they win?" Karin looked at Max with her eyebrows raised. "You forget that this has all happened before. They already won. They already had the city and their Wyrmhole before all of you showed up. We were still here."
She turned to Yvonne. "Or we sit back and watch you destroy each other, before picking off the winners," Karin said with a shrug. But underneath the apparently apathetic reaction, she was smiling. "Why should we trust you. Why should we stand by you as you fight a much stronger enemy. Why should we pick the losing side. Give me a reason."
Give me a good reason so I can take it back to the colony, stupid girl.

"Only because you hide in the sewers. If they weren't here you wouldn't need to hide from them. The wall wont hold them out forever and even hiding wont save you if they get a way across. If they're strong enough to defeat us what makes you think you're strong enough to pick them off?" She looks away. She's already being a bit mean, but what she was going to say was almost cruel. She hated having to say it, but it needed saying. "You've seen what happens when they enter your territory. They weren't even after you then."

"Let's get something straight," Karin said. "First off, we don't need you. You need us. Keep that in mind, remember it, and make sure all the Ratkin think you believe it, or you'll never get any negotiations done. Second, don't underestimate us. Just because we choose not to fight your wars doesn't mean we're hiding. And finally, we know the other doggies are double-crossing, mass-murdering bastards. What we don't know is that you're not. And to be honest, you haven't given us much reason to believe you're not."

The overt and insistent hostility is irritating Yvonne, but no more than any other children she's dealt with in the past. "No, we need to work together. We need each other. How have we ever given you the idea we would double-cross you? Yes, I admit we made a stupid mistake - but we didn't mean you or your kind any harm. I never asked you to fight in 'our' war, but the moment they found you suddenly you couldn't handle them. It will spill over again whether we're around or not, and without us to fight them it will only be worse. Eventually the war will come to you, it's not going to go away if you sit back and watch while pretending it's not your problem." She pauses and looks Karin over skeptically. "We have no reason to trust you either do we? Your kind do have a reputation for backstabbing and deception and you've done a lot to reinforce that with your talk of sitting back and letting us die for a war that will come for you when it's done with us. But I'm still here to talk of cooperation. We need to set our differences aside and work together."

"We're going in circles now," Karin said irritably. "We've heard all these arguments before. They're the same arguments the other side makes. We're tired of hearing about trust. We know neither of you can be trusted."
She stood up.
"Well, that was a complete waste of my time."

Yvonne sets her jaw, swallowing back the rising frustration at Karin's flippant mistrust. "Well, I'm sorry you feel that way. I don't think there's anything we can offer you then." She stands and looks down at Max, unconsciously smoothing her hair down where it had been ruffled against the park bunch. "Come on, I don't think there's anything we can do here." Yvonne gives Karin a last glance to offer a goodbye. "It was..." The word 'nice' is her normal choice, but she can't bring herself to say it. "...interesting meeting you."

Max watched Karin walk away without saying a word. Then he stood and dusted off his trousers. "Well, I don't think there was much more we could do," he said, knowing Yvonne would probably be a little furstrated. Sending an Ahroun to negotiate with difficult ratkin was probably not the best idea.
"I have a feeling she got what she came here for, or she wouldn't have left," he added. "I'm not quite sure what that was though."
