If Jona hadn't flashed that all to 'readable' look Em would have stood up and volunteered as well. If only to show, a female could die just as gloriously as any male. Men! Some days! But as it is she grinds her teeth together as she nods in understanding to Jona. After all she had seen the brief look as he realized the curse was very real.
So stood back and listened to them all jump up and volunteer and didn't say a word. Even though she was dying to.
Of the all though, it was Simeon's little speech that caught her attention. Surely he hadn't bee rehearsing it, after all who would have known their would be so many volunteers. So, for something off the cuff of his sleeve it was rather good. Shifting her weight she looked to see if it affected anyone else in the group, and then she looked up to see what, if anything the guardian spirit was doing.

It is all Jess can to do keep herself from whimpering as her fears are realised. She knew it would happen - Jona could hardly let the packless tagalongs stand up and not him, but she was scared. She looks over to him, her eyes clearly showing her fear, willing him to listen to Simeon and withdraw his offer.

Hands of Mercy lets out a low, soft growl at Zachary's words. The Shadow Lord had as much right as anyone to offer to carry the burden, but to deny the others... but now is not the time to give the irritating fool an education. Simeon steps in and says most of it anyway. Hands of Mercy shifts up to his breed form, towering over the rest, and relaxes his grip on the bow that appears in his hands. To Zachary he says simply, "We are all Garou, warriors. To die fighting the Wyrm is the best end we can hope for."
Then he looks up to the grand spirit above them all. "Will you choose, or do you want us to?"

The Raven watched their discussion, but only spoke after Hands of Mercy addressed it directly. It looked from one of them to the other, and then responded in the Mother's Tongue.
"Hrafnsmerki does not choose the bearer," it said. "The bearer chooses Hrafnsmerki."

Jona looked at the others. He had felt Simeon's powerful speech, and admired Hands of Mercy's quiet resolve. But he was the Alpha. He had to do something.
"We will not argue," he said. "We are a unit of warriors, not kitchen maids. We do not squabble over who gets the glory."
He looked at both Galliards. "This was a task set to us by our Totem," he said. "It is our task, so one of us should do it."

Zachary sighed as he looked at Hands of Mercy. " Yes..but... you might be needed" he muttured and then tried to make clear his intentions by using simple words. " You all...are so...good, one has pack, two are just able. I am not. I can rage. That is all. That is my job. You have future" he said, trying to sound clear.

Simeon said nothing at first, but looked at each of the challengers, for that was what they were now, challengers, in the eyes directly. Finally he stopped facing Jona and nodded slowly. " You are right and you are wrong. You are right that we are warriors but wrong to assume the burden is yours alone. We all agreed to run with you, and as such we agreed to this task as well. I say we settle this as warriors. Let he who is fittest and most worthy carry Hrafnsmerki. Let it be a challenge."

"Did your totem set you to finding the banner, or to carrying it into battle? You have found it. You have delivered it to the Sept. It does not have to be your burden further." Hands of Mercy meets Simeon's gaze and doesn't flinch, accepting the challenge. "A test of Will, perhaps?" he suggests.

Zachary looks around. He isn't sure about the challenge part, but he IS an ahroun, and rage burms deep in his soul. "I accept" he says, standing straight.

"How can you defeat the enemy when you disagree among yourselves. A true warrior does not lay claim to glory, but proves himself worthy of it in the heat of battle."
The gaffling hopped off the branch and landed on a lower one as Hrafnhild spread his wings again.
"It seems to me you have much to learn before you are worthy of Hrafnsmerki. If you ride into battle as you are, nothing, not even fate, will help you win."
The branches of the willow started to close again, concealing Hrafnhild behind them.

"Wait!" Em called out in the language of the spirits "It is our way, they are making sure that who ever takes it will be the one best suited. Only the strongest should...and then once that is done the pack will follow and support. It is how our wild kin do it and how we do it. Just as a flock has its pecking order the wolves have theirs, and we would not dishonor Hrafnsmerki with one who carries it for the wrong reasons." She took a few steps towards the tree as she pleaded, she was no gallaird and words weren't always as easy for her, but the guardian needed to know that they were doing what it wanted, but they were doing it in a way that was familiar to them as Garou.
Taking another step towards the spirit, her voice still somewhat pleading she simply asked it "What would you have us do to prove we are worthy. Our need is great for without Hrafnsmerki much will be lost to the Wrym."

Jess turns as the spirit speaks again, but Emelie is quicker. She steps forward to add to Emelie's words, though. "We didn't know you're secret would be the banner 'till we got here. So we've not had chance to sort it out. Better we've got more'n one of us willing to carry you than just getting one or none, right?" Her words aren't as pretty as Emelie's, but they come easily.

Hands of Mercy also looks up to the spirit. He doesn't understand what the girls are saying, but addresses the bird himself anyway as it had addressed them all. "I did not step forward to claim Glory. I came because I am willing to pay your price for the sake of the Sept. There may be Glory and Honour in it, but more importantly there is a future for our Sept and our Nation."

"A true pack will not fight over their place in it. They will know who must take the burden, and they will protect the bearer and take the burden should he fall. If you still ask this question, you are not ready. The enemy will strike hard at he who carries the Raven banner. For as long as it stands, they cannot win. If you cannot decide who will pick it up now, how can decide in battle. Or will you stop then too for a challenge of of will?"
He looked Emelie and tilted his head sideways a little, as if considering.
"Maybe there is something you can do to prove your unity. Maybe... if you find the Silver Moon, and return it here. Yes, find the Silver Moon, and you shall be found worthy of Hrafnsmerki."
None of the present company have heard of that word before.
(I added in some things and rolled rituals.)

Jona liked where this was going. Unearthing lost lore, that was their specialty, and there was no way these three were going to outdo him. The raven might not have posed it as a challenge, but he took it like one. For him and Jess, this was what they were best at, it was what they were charged to do.
"Where was it last?" he asked the raven spirit.
He was already in detective mode. He didn't want to overload the spirit with questions, so he made sure to ask the important ones.
