Kasiya exits the Library, followed by Danny. He sits and tests the night air for scents. This place feels like a Caern but it smells wrong, the Wyrm's pollution is carried in the air, spread by the machines of the weaver.
"Thankyou Rhya. I have to return to the Hive."
So much is left unsead. Wolves do not make grand speeches. He'd been asleep when Danny made his dire announcement, so he knew no better. As far as he was concerned the others had returned and were safe and well.

Galliards, however, love grand speeches. And Danny was the worst in that respect. But this wasn't the time for talking. He joined Kasiya outside, and let the door close quietly behind them. He watched is Auspice moon as it started to set, and then Kasiya spoke.
He noted his tone. There was something a lot more to it there. Something told Danny this was not just about the missing pack. "I know you must," he said. "You all must. The pack has not returned. I fear the worst."

"That will cause the Cub Anna grief. You know she communes with the restless dead?"
He will deal with the missing pack later. He came out here to discuss the Cub. Kasiya's eyes bore into his senior, gauging his awareness oftheir ancient duty. The miasma of the dead does not cling to him so closely as it does Kasiya.
Perhaps he cannot see?
Kasiya has always believed that at the inception of their tribe all Striders must have communed with the dead, and that the skill has waned over centuries and generations. After all, their oldest duty is to guide the dead.

Danny did not look very surprised at this. "I had my suspicions," he said. "But she sees many things. She blocks them out, along with everything else. To her, it's just another form of madness that she seeks to overcome. Lacking the sight myself, I have never been able to confirm they weren't."
Danny didn't need to be told that he hadn't done a great job with Anna. He had believed that teaching was his calling for a long time, and had always been fairly good at it. But these things were beyond him. Maybe that is why you are here, younger brother.
"You do too, don't you?" he said. It wasn't really a question.

Kasiya replies, and while the words alone could be taken as pompous, they are spoken with quiet dignity that denies all glory-seeking.
"Yes. I was named for it. I attend our oldest duty. That is why I must return. The Hive swarms with the dead and they must be laid to rest."
He locks the dread at attending so many at once deep within.
"I could teach the Cub what she needs to know."
But only if she will learn. His last thought belies itself in the unconscious posture and body language of Wolves.

"You wish to take her back," he said, sounding all at once concerned. The very idea of sending them back brings a heavy frown to his face. But he was in Lupus, and it was probably wasted in this form. "Do you think that is wise?"

Unfazed by his senior's scepticism, he continues:
"If I do not, she will go alone. This way it builds trust and she learns how to channel her gifts. Is she a Theurge?"

"She is a Theurge," Danny said. It was the only thing he had been sure of since they had found her. He studied Kasiya for a while, and then stared back up at the sky. It was becoming lighter by the minute, and the moon was gone.
"Then, I will trust your judgment," he said. "Take her back, but don't go alone. And I must warn you..." He stopped, not sure about how to say this. "Anna isn't very stable at the best of times," he forced himself to say that. He had taken her in regardless, and even convinced Vasara to adopt her into his pack and tribe. But it had to be said. "She comes from a tainted line of Garou, and it haunts her. So be careful."

"She will be haunted the rest of her life. I can show her how to cope."
Kasiya pauses, mentally one conversation has ended and another begun.
"Her gift is rare. We should offer her to Owl at the time of her Rite of Passage."

"Ours is a dark and difficult road," he said. "Do you think she can take it?" He had known Anna a year, and Kasiya had barely known her day. And yet Danny was asking him what he thought she could or could not do. Maybe it was because they both shared the burdens of the dead that he understood her better.
"Then, we will consult Owl on this," he said finally. "When the time is right, He will know if she is capable of it."

"I survived and my only guide at first was one of the dead. If she wishes to learn then I can teach her. Then, it is Owl's decision."
Again, the conversation ends in Kasiya's mind, conclusion has been reached.
"Who else will come to the Hive?"

"Take the Fury, she can handle herself well," he said, thinking it over. "And Simeon. Anna can take you through the safer parts of the city. She knows it better than even I do. Beware of the ones who guard the wall, and..."
He paused, knowing well that the part of leader had just been forced upon Kasiya unwillingly. But he knew he would take it, because the situation called for it. And Danny respected him for that.
"Lead them well."

Kasiya realises as Danny speaks exactly what is required of him. He groans inwardly, the weight of responsibilities bearing down upon him. He is no Alpha, to be leading Garou into a Hive, but then, this is no mission of war, but a scouting party looking for their lost warriors. His muzzle dips slightly, accepting his task, then comes up higher than before. The sign of an Alpha although he would not wish for it. He is, above all else, a lone wolf.
First the Children, now my fellow Garou. But then, the Fury and I fought well together. Simeon and I got into the Cell. Anna needs the teaching I can offer more than she knows. I have connections to them. It will work
Bearing up well:
"The Fury has left. Where can I find her?"

"I will call her back," Danny said. "You can rouse the others and tell them their tasks. There is little time to waste now."
A whole night had gone by with the pack missing, and Danny hoped he hadn't made the decision that would mean their deaths. He turned from Kasiya and stared back up at the rising sun, hoping Yvonne was still asleep.

There is nothing more to say. Kasiya heads back inside to seek out Simeon. He would rouse his Tribesman first. They would need a united front to face Anna. He is not worried about the events about to unfold, he lives Now. What will happen in a few hours time is for them to discover together.
