The spirit of the great ash tree lies somewhere to the North of the Caern, in the Umbral forest, sttill close enough to be within the bawn, and yet far enough from the library's umbral representation. Though not the most spiritual Garou, Vasara has a personal understanding with the spirit of this tree. It is, in fact, the same tree where he hanged Anna.
In the late afternoon, this place is quiet and peaceful, and home to a number of friendly spirits. It is a sharp contrast to the rest of the city's Umbra, and probably one of the few pure places in Berlin.

This may've been the first time Erik had seen Berlin's Umbral-side, but this was no time for sightseeing.
He was ready for the duel, and was eager to get things underway.
He appraises his soon-to-be-opponent as he waits for Vasara to explain the rules of the duel.
Bow versus knife, in an Umbral forest. This was going to be interesting, to say the least.

Hands of Mercy had not hidden his confusion at the other Fenrir's response to the 'Fang's knife, but hadn't asked what its significance was. Of more concern to him was Judgement-from-the-Skies' response to their preparations. What had rankled with the Forsetti? He shakes himself, this is no time to be worrying about that. He had a challenge to win.
Having used one of his own knives to aid his entry to the Umbra, Hands of Mercy approaches the tree with the other Garou, wondering idly whether the packmate who had been hanged here was a traitor or a Godi.
As they came to a halt, he stood, still in homid, Forest's Hunger held in one hand, the fear rising again in his mind. He'd got all he could reasonably have asked from the terms of the challenge, and his opponent hadn't baulked immediately at the idea of a Garou preferring a ranged weapon over melee combat. Neither had the two other Fenrir. Now was the time to test whether it would be enough.

Vasara looked at the tree and the serene surroundings. A great place for challenge, he thought, maybe this place could be used on other Rites and meetings too later on... Then he turned to face two garou with him.
"Are you two ready to start?" he asked with surprisingly peaceful voice. "This fight is not to the death, and you are not allowed to leave this area. You lose if you yeld, go unconscious OR if you frenzy. In case of frenzy, other participant must cease his attacks and I will step in and try not to kill the frenzied one as I will stop the fight. Remember that this is a challenge, not a battle against Wyrm."
For a moment Vasara wondered if this was such a good idea, and maybe he should impose other restrictions, like stopping the fight when a bad enough wound was inflicted on opponent. He really didn't want another seriously injured garou, or in worst case two, in his hands. But well, metis WAS Fenrir so Vasara trusted he could both give and take punishment. And the Fang was... well, let's say Vasara wouldn't mind to see him hurting.
"Take your positions." Vasara took ten stones into his hand and showed them to participants "When last of these stones hits the ground, begin!" Then Vasara started to throw the stones between duelists, giving them time to maneuver and prepare for the fight.

Erik gives a silent nod to Vasara, yet his gaze is firmly locked on his opponent. He understood the rules, he may not've agreed with all of them, but they were simple enough.
He knew that this was going to be more a game of hide-and-seek than a face-to-face battle. While he could risk an arrow or two sticking out of him as he closed the gap between the bowman and himself, he understood that using the umbral trees as cover would be a wiser tactic.
So, the moment the first stone hits the earth, he is gone, the form of a majestic white wolf seen for a split second as it ducks behind the nearest tree.

Hands of Mercy also nods, and as the Silver Fang seeks cover behind the trees, he also makes tracks to disappear from view. As the stones continue to fall, he begins to move more carefully, quickly selecting a tree that would give him some cover in its branches without leaving him unable to use his bow. He shifts up to Glabro and climbs quickly, before settling in to hide and watch. He does not expect to be waiting long.
((Stealth, trying to position myself to see him before he sees me))

The forest was mostly quiet, and moderately well-lit in what sunlight pierced the overcast skies. There was the occasional gust of wind providing an audio backdrop as well, which combined with the foliage to provide a reasonable amount of cover for their movements. Hands-of-Mercy scaled one of the many trees with ease. Once up there, he found what he thought was a good place amidst to branches to settle with his bow. Erik takes cover as well, as a wolf rather than as a man, and is fairly sure he's out of sight behind another tree.
Both Erik and Hands were hidden from each other well, they couldn't even guess how far away their opponent was at that point. Even Vasara, with the luxury of being able to stand and watch, lost sight of them both quickly.
Since they could both give themselves away at any second, I'm going to start doing this by initiative. Lowest roller declares first and acts second, but until one of you spots the other you can't directly respond to each other's actions. You can use conditional actions, 'attack if I see my target' for example.

Hands sits and waits, listening and watching carefully for any sound or sight that might betray his opponent.
((He will shoot if he gets a clear shot this round, but not at a flicker of movement unless it's already starting to climb his tree.))

Once behind cover, Erik allows himself a moment to adjust to his new form, his ears pricking-up at the sound of the final pebble as it lands.
In order to combat the Fenrir, he would first need to find him, and so, the hunt begins.
Motionless, for the moment, he embraces his enhanced lupine senses, doing his best to block-out any unimportant stimuli from the forest's surroundings. Sniffing the air, his nostrils flare as he tries to pick-up the skald's scent,
((Staying hidden behind the tree and attempting to detect Hands of Mercy. If shot at, will dodge behind a different tree...))

Neither combatant could see any sign of the other, with them both well-hidden and neither giving any indication of movement. What direction there was in the air was going across between the two, giving neither side an advantage in scenting their opponent. Erik managed to notice Hands-of-Mercy's scent nonetheless, and had a good idea of which direction to start looking in.

With a general idea of which direction to begin searching, Erik stalks his prey.
Slinking from tree to tree, he attempts to circle around behind where he believed the skald may be. Keeping himself downwind, he begins tracking the scent, eyes sharp and ears at attention, searching for any sign of the other Garou.
((Same as before, but with added Stealth-slinking...))

Erik moved out hugging the trees, foliage and dips in the land masterfully. He followed the scent he'd picked up, but he couldn't see any sign of his target. Hands-of-Mercy saw no indication of the stealthy approach either, so is left simply to perch in his tree with his bow. With no sign of their opponents, Hands-of-Mercy was forced to watch and wait, while Erik could only keep approaching in the direction his nose had indicated.
From Vasara's point of view, there's a tense period almost stretching out to thirty seconds without any apparent movement.
Then Hands-of-Mercy glanced down, and noticed Erik creeping directly under his tree. The guy was obviously good to have gotten so far without being noticed, but he seemed totally oblivious to Hands-of-Mercy watching from above. All Erik knew as he passed yet another tree was that Hands-of-Mercy's smell was emnating from around there somewhere, but he couldn't see where.
Hands-of-Mercy gets a suprise round (or you could wait and aim, if you want to skirt detection) and since Erik doesn't know better he can only keep on searching oblivious.

Hands of Mercy almost yelps when he spots the white wolf so close. He hadn't expected the 'Fang Ahroun to be so damned quiet. Stifling the urge to react immediately, he very carefuly levels his bow at the Ahroun. He would likely only get one shot before he felt the full force of the Ahroun's Rage, so he had to make it count.
((Aiming for a single round, then loosing. Willpower on the shot.))

Erik, oblivious to the threat above him, continues his search, scanning the area for any sign of the Fenrir.
((Still searching... obviously aborting to dodge if Erik manages to spot the attacker in time...))
