Danny led the way through the forest until they reached a clearing. There, in the shadow of a large Ash tree, he stopped and turned to Tristain.
"We will have to wait for the girls to bring what we need," he said. "But we can find the branch here. Then we will perform the Rite of Cleansing. If the spirits see what I have seen, then you have nothing to fear of this rite."
He started look around the base of the tree for a good branch that they could use for the Rite.
"I take it you know the moon of your auspice already?" he asked.

Tristain stands gloomily near the edge of the clearing, watching Danny with dark eyes. He nods a few seconds after the question and replies simply "Ragabash. New moon."

Danny nodded and continued his search for a branch.
"I would have guessed," he said. He had managed to remain hidden for so long, while the Spirals were actively looking for him
"I knew a lad once, he was about your age, also a New Moon. He had a bit of a wicked sense of humour. Always smiling too, I don't think I ever saw him without that foolish grin. He spent his entire life in Berlin, living right under the noses of the Spirals... that's before we reclaimed the West side. They never knew of him; never discovered him. He was that good."
He picked a good branch and sat down and started to remove the extra twigs. After a while he put it aside and started to build a fire. "But he was a Bone Gnawer to boot, knew all the tricks of the streets. I bet not even the ratkin know this city as well as he did."

Tristain doesn't move from his spot, or lighten up in his gaze as he warily watches Danny prepare the materials for the Rite. "What's a Bone Gnawer?" he asks, without preamble.

Danny turned and looked at Tristain. "You don't know about the other tribes?" he asked, sounding surprised. Most Black Spiral Dancers seemed to.

"Until... two days ago, I didn't know there were Garou who weren't Black Spiral Dancers. I guess Jess didn't want me to think I had a choice. Actually, it wasn't 'till I spoke with Anna that I really knew you lot were any different from them."

"You never fought other Garou while you were with them?" Danny asked. He stopped working on the fire and focused his attention on Tristain instead. "So what did they teach you?"

"Never met anyone other than the two of them. They said they'd introduce me to the rest when I was ready. To the Hive." Danny had shared a sliver of information. There were many tribes, the Spirals were one, and their opposition, this Garou Nation was made up of many more. So the Spirals would have to either be the largest or the strongest. And having met Unyeilding Might, he couldn't say for sure which.
"They taught me their ways, their laws. They taught me a bit about the Umbra." He takes a breath. "and how to... properly honour the spirits. They taught me to fight, but not against anything really powerful. I thought Unyeilding Might's insistence that I wasn't strong enough was because he was a crazy violent fuck who just wanted an excuse to hit me some more, or because I'd have to hold my own against others when we went to the Hive."

"You're probably lucky you didn't get to go there," Danny said grimly. "And I hope you never do." He was a little surprised that the Black Spiral Dancers had taught him so much, and yet left out their strongest enemies. It seemed he knew less about them and how they worked than he originally thought. "What did you learn about spirits?" he asked.

"Some of the types, well the types they deal with. And a bit about what the spirits of the other bits of the Triat do. And some about ..." what was the word Jess had used "chimanage? Trading favours." He shudders, remembering the favours he did.

Danny nodded and returned to building the fire. "What sort of chiminage do you do for bane spirits?" he asked. He seemed to at least know what it meant.

"All kinds of things. None of it pleasant." Tristain shakes his head, even facing Danny's questions, he was unwilling to describe what he had done. "You never did answer my question. Not properly."

"You didn't answer mine either," Danny said.
"The Bone Gnawers are one the many tribes, like the Black Spiral Dancers. Unlike the Dancers, however, they are not in service to the Wyrm. Do you know why they call themselves the Black Spiral Dancers?"

"Yeah. Something else that was in store once I was ready. Why are the Bone Gnawers better at hiding than others?" Tristain figured he was going to have to press his own questions in if he was going to get answers out of the older Garou.

"I didn't say they were," Danny said. "I said they knew the streets better. They're a tribe of city kids, street dwellers, and what humans would call the lower class. The city's not an easy place to fight the Wyrm, and no one does it better than them. What did they tell you about the Black Spiral then?"
