Danny had hoped it wouldn't come to this, and although he had known Vasara would not take this lightly, the challenge itself came as a surprise. He snarled back, and rose to Crinos himself.
"So be it," he said. "I accept your challenge, Judgment-from-the-Skies. With your pack as our witnesses, let's settle this here and now."
He kept staring at Vasara's eye with his own, refusing to look away in spite of the terrifying look of Fenris himself in it.
"Let's save our claws for the enemy," he said. He had nothing but respect for the younger Garou, even now as he defied rank and reason. The had fought together too many times. "We will face each other down, and whoever remains standing will decide the cub's fate."

Silence falls over the gathering as the two large Crinos Garou stare into each other's eye. Nobody is foolish enough to interrupt the challenge. The difference in rank is bridged by the gifts of Fenris, that give Danny the impression that he is staring into the eye of great Fenris himself. And the difference in age and experience is bridged by Vasara's pure Garou breeding and the blood of the Northern Jarls. As the pack and Yvonne watch, Tristain feels the fear rise in his throat. It urges him to shift to Lupus and run for his life, knowing that if Danny loses, his life is forfeit to the large Fenrir. However, he manages to hold back the urge, for now. A short while into the staring contest, Vasara feels a sharp pain sear up his bare skull. It feels almost as if someone is hammering a nail into his head, and his eye threatens to water and force him to look away.
[Tristain gains rage. No frenzy. Vasara botches on the 3rd roll is forced to spend willpower if he wants to keep going.]

Anna watched the two of them face down, unable to tear her eyes away. She wasn't even sure who she wanted to win. She had never seen Vasara go against an elder, especially not one he had respect for. She did look away long enough to catch sight of Tristain. He looked ready to bolt. She didn't want to say anything over the silence of the challenge, but she shook her head. Don't. It would only make things worse for him.

Tristain looks on in sheer terror as the two Garou stare down over his fate. He notices Anna's gesture, but doesn't really know what to make of it. He also notices the woman behind him with a blade, and suddenly wishes he could be on both sides of Danny at once. About the only coherent thought in his head is the knowledge that taking out his knife, which he so desperately wishes to do, would mean death regardless of what happens infront of him, and somehow he does manage to bite down the urge.

Vasara bit his teeth together. Damn that wound... But he would not let the Spiral live, not on the long run and pushed his face closer to Danny's face.

Danny remained in place, and continued to glare as well. There was no going back on this now.

The silence drags on as Vasara draws on his strength to ignore the pain in his scar, and continues to stare. The two Garou are so evenly matched, that their eyes begin to water at almost the exact same moment, and they have to pull all their resolve together not to look away. Although their will is sapped, nothing can make the Fenrir look away, as such an act would mean the Spiral walks free.
This is close: Vasara on 0 Willpower Danny on 1 Willpower
Seeing the fanatic Get of Fenris at work was enough for No-Eyes to take notice in dismay and his whispers entered Anna's mind again. "See how dogma leads 'your' tribe to strike blindly at anything labelled enemy? He knows nothing, he just lashes out because he's been told to hate the Wyrm. Just as 'your' tribe's forefathers murdered so many humans because they had been told to. The tribe hasn't changed from the bigoted, narrow-minded views it's always held." No-Eyes' tone conveyed pure disgust at Vasara's behavior. "At least you have a reason to want to kill Tristain, you want him to die because of what happened to you, but still you don't choose to be bigoted against us even with such a personal stake. I will forever regret the treatment you received, and I am glad for your wisdom. I can only hope it will one day allow you to make the right decision."

Vasara felt how close it was, he was exhausted and he could see so was Danny. But he knew it would be close for them to face each other down, and he would have preferred for actual fight. Only his respect to Danny had prevented him from arguing on Challenge. The final, searing pain flashed in his head and Vasara lifted his hand to touch his battlescar. His vision blurred and his exhausted mind didn't register the movement of his eye.
"Shit..." he growled as he draw for final reserves, he would not let this Spiral walk, it was his sole purpose. ( ooc: Activate Strength of Purpose )
His vision cleared he saw himself still staring at Danny. His forehead. There was nothing he could do but accept the loss and he turned his head from Danny to Tristain "You stray, and I will hunt you down like a dog you are."
"We will be moving to Ragnarok." Vasara said to Danny. He was defiant but could not argue. He had lost and the kid would live. But he would never let his pack live in place where this Spiral could slit their throats in their sleep.

Tristain is quite clearly and visibly trembling as the contest drags on. Several times, his hands starts to stray towards the pocket which holds the knife, and he has to stop himself with a conscious force of will. He opens his mouth to speak when Vasara addresses him, to try and offer some promise or assurance, but he finds his throat is dry and he can't even make a sound. He looks around again, again his gaze falling on Anna, trying to gauge her reaction to all this.

Nadya tries very, very hard to hide her dissapointment so she only lets out a small grunt of frustration. She tucks the shiv into her boot, but doesn't move from behind Tristain for now. Maybe he'll panic and run anyway, then she could always say she didn't mean to rip his throat out.

Saxon stood and watched impassively as the two of them squared off in a stare down. Danny won which meant the Ronin lived for now and that in a way pleased Saxon. He respected Vasara but in this instance he had let his blind hatred blind him to the need for intelligence.
The Spirals where all over them, hitting their kin, crossing the wall which meant their intelligence was spot on. Where as their intelligence was floundering in the dark. Sure slit his throat but first pump him for what he knew.
He moved so he was by Anna and said softly, "You had best do what ever it is with Danny and the Ronin as soon as possible. As you know Vasara is not much of the forgive and forget sort. The kid so much as looks at him cross eyed and Danny or not Vasara will throat him."

Danny felt no satisfaction at the outcome, and even less at Vasara's final words. He turned around to look at Tristain. He had managed to keep his cool through all this. Danny had half expected him to run for his life at some point. He was relieved he hadn't.
He turned back to Vasara and spoke quietly. "Owl and Bear were battle brothers before this, before your pack. You and I have lost more than anyone for this city. Walk away in anger, and it will be a blow the Sept will never recover from."

Kamut relaxes noticably as Vasara looks away. He stays silent though, waiting for them to talk it out, and watching Tristain closely while they do. He wonders if Tristain realises he's likely going to suffer a lot more for being allowed to live.

"Owl and Bear are still battle brothers, but I will not risk the lives of my packmates by staying at caern with him. We will take Ragnarok as our headquarters, but we will work with the caern and battle the Wyrm on our own fronts. If I cannot kill him now..." Vasara looked at Tristain "...I can still watch and be around when he Falls."
"And if he Falls, he will not be the only one I will hunt down." Vasara gave final, icy stare to Danny before turning his back and leaving. "Slagbröder, come, we have Wyrm to fight."

He has enough reason to. I haven't forgotten how many of us have been killed by 'your' tribe. And if he's done only a fraction of the things I've seen them do, then he does deserve to die. It's not my decision. It never was, and I shouldn't have made it.
Anna had zoned out for a bit as she argued with No-Eyes, but snapped out of it when she heard Saxon's voice. She nodded at his advice, but was unsure what to do. She wanted to stay behind and perform the rite. She had said she was going to. But Vasara's order to the pack was very clear, and now was not a good time to test his patience.
Now Tristain was looking at her, and Vasara was walking away. She wanted to explain, but there was really not much she could say. With a parting nod to Yvonne and Danny, she followed her pack and left the forest.
